Confession #4: Proud Moment

I know you are going to hate me for not documenting this properly but so far in my art career the one piece I have felt most proud of was one I do not have. It is in the attic of my parents' house and unfortunately it is too short of notice for them to try to find it (their words, not mine). I promise to include pictures hopefully in the next week so that I can document this properly but for now I will just explain it. The piece I am most proud of is one that I did senior year of high school. It was for my drawing/painting class. I consider drawing/painting to be my specialty but since I am just starting with my art major I have yet to take any of those classes yet. For this piece, we were simply instructed to do a portrait using crayons and watercolor. I had been flipping through magazines and found an article entitled something like, "China: The All-Seeing Eye." This is the actual picture of it:

So I drew exactly what you see in this picture. However, I changed the background. Underneath the red hue I added a passage from the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the book I was reading in my English class at the time. I stenciled the passage which had to do with how the patients felt like they were always being monitored by either the Nurse or the government. I did the whole piece in crayon then painted over the background in watercolor. The effect of the waxy crayon made the paint resistant which I thought made the writing stand out more. I was very proud of this piece because it was not the same as everyone else who seemed to do self portraits. I am currently working on my English minor and have always felt that Art and English compliment one another. I was happy that I found a way to incorporate both of my passions into one piece of work. My art teacher hung it up in the library and quite a few people were freaked out by it's morbidness. I think if they would have taken the time to read it they would have understood better.
