Truth and Fiction in the Media
In today's primarily entertainment driven world, what we refer to as the "news" seems to be boggled down by fabrications in order to make stories more appealing. From stories reported on Rebecca Black to basically anything shown on Fox news, the news has become less and less about what is true and more about what will garner viewers. The numerous tabloids have become more popular than any newspaper I have ever bothered to read. Unfortunately I think that journalists have lost their credibility on reporting on such nonsense stories. It plays into the capitalist machine that the media has already become. Everything has become a competition so therefore each news channel or reporter feels the pressure to create the best stories in order to remain the most popular. This fabrication of facts actually does more harm than good. To me it feels like our attention is drawn away from more serious stories in order to focus on such things as the trivial lives (and often lies) of celebrities. It makes me want to ask the question of what is really being hidden? Maybe the truth is actually scarier than fiction. In this way, fake entertainment masks the real stories which could be more controversial.
