Response to Lecture

I learned a lot about spoken word and performance today while in lecture. From the moment Beau Sia began his introduction I was not sure what I should believe. It seemed like his performance began when he walked into the room and only ended once he started taking questions. All of his actions, tone of voice, words, and dialogue between added to his performance. I honestly never thought that spoken word involved so many aspects. I feel like it was an extension of a lecture, like he was teaching us about how to perform spoken word while doing it at the same time. I like how this form of art functions as a logical and well articulated stream of consciousness. Every word had a point for being in the poem or being said in a specific way. It gave them more meaning then if they were just being recited. All of the students that went beforehand also demonstrated this. My favorite was Chanel who went first. I felt like she started off with one idea as her problem and then presented all these other aspects as effects and then was able to circle back around to her main point at the end. Hers was the most entertaining as well which I also believe is an important part of performing. Each presenter found a way to connect to the audience even if they did not share the same experience. I have a lot of respect for any person that can do this. As they were up there speaking I just thought to myself how difficult that would be. In spite of this, maybe I'll try it one day :)
