Well, on Friday I went to LA and visited the Getty Villa in Malibu. I have never been before. During fall quarter I took Art History 6C which focused on art from the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman eras. The art I saw at the Getty Villa was most of the art I had previously learned about so although they were copies, it was still very insightful to see these pieces up close. My favorite part was that they had a statue, of Aphrodite I think, that you were allowed to touch and take pictures with. I did not know this at first so when I saw people grabbing the statue I was very confused. Although I prefer more contemporary art, after visiting the Getty Villa and taking art history, I am incredibly inspired by the craftsmanship that have gone in to each of these pieces, especially the sculptures. Last quarter in Art 7C we used plaster and I remember it being extremely difficult for me to carve anything out of that. I have no idea how one would even begin to sculpt a human body, and to such perfection that I am often left in awe. We took a few pictures (and had fun with the statue) while we were there, I hope you enjoy them!
