Summary of Intro (Friday)

Unfortunately the Reader was only available on Friday and since I was in LA, I was unable to get it until today. I have yet to receive the Comic Book as well, sorry, but no excuses for my late posts. The introduction to the Reader was very insightful as far as explaining our objectives for this course. I have learned the work of Cage, Duchamp and Rauschenberg in my previous art and music classes, but have yet to study Tinguely and Cunningham. This introduction basically explains the new outlook on art set forth byb each of these artists. I like the quote which reveals their somewhat "disregard" for artists only comes from their immense fascination with life and the world around them. They advocate less interpretation and more experience which allows everything to be a sculpture, or a dance, or even music. I remember the first time I heard Cage's 4'33 in music class last year and having the same reaction as my peers around me, one of confusion and awkwardness. It was only after the explanation of the song which allows the audience to create the music from their reaction, that I began to understand and become interested in this new take on art. I enjoy Pop Art, which is emphasized within the Intro. As I keep taking art classes I am beginning to understand the relationship between artist and audience more clearly. I like the idea presented that art is more for the audience and there is less clouding over of narrative and interpretation from the artist. Art as an experience makes more sense, than art for "art's sake alone."
