In a quick break from writing my essay I decided to reveal one of my favorite artists in this blog. Last year I came across an artists by the name of Vladimir Kush. I was lucky enough to visit one of his galleries in Laguna Beach last summer which I thought was very cool. I feel like this is the type of art I would like to do. I have yet to take any drawing or painting classes at UCSB but I hope that when I do I will have the freedom to draw and paint pictures more related to this kind of genre. Surrealism, so far, is probably my favorite artistic style. I like the combination of illusion with real, common scene or objects. Rene Magritte, who in my mind was one of the masters of this, is another one of my favorite artists. I feel like most of the time I live in an abstract world, regardless of the environment surrounding me. Paintings such as those by Magritte, Kush, Dali, and Kay Sage remind of this world that I cannot describe with words. Although they paint ordinary objects they distort them in a way that turns them into something extraordinary. Kush in particular uses color and competing ideas to transform an everyday object into something else that possesses various meanings. These are a few of my favorite pieces by him:
I hope I can visit his gallery again the next time I go home. I tried to emulate some of the style last year when I had the chance to paint on the outside of a bathroom at Chilla Vista.
Hopefully this year I will have the same chance to paint something again. I found it very fun painting in public although it is an activity I often perform in the privacy of my own room. It was nice to talk and get suggestions from onlookers. I hope that I will be able to improve my skills next year when I began taking drawing and painting classes again.
